Generations

Audrey is the first girl in four generations for the Lyle family (Brock's dad's direct line). Everyone tells us she is going to be one spoiled little thing, but I think she'll just be very loved and very aware of that love.

She is also a treasure on the Thomas side.
Here we have three generations of women in the Thomas family at Audrey's Baby Blessing.

And here are four generations in the Bradshaw family. Grandma Ruth, her oldest daughter (Mom), Mom's oldest daughter (me), and my oldest daughter (Audrey).

Pretty amazing!

She's Finally Here!

Presenting Little Miss Audrey Karren Lyle!

Born Friday, June 24, 2011 at 2:38 in the morning. We were at the Redwood City Kaiser Hospital (the same hospital her brothers were born in).

Labor was short--only three hours, with a mere five minutes of pushing. She came out looking perfect with a darling round head covered in thick dark hair (sadly, already starting to thin).

We stayed in the hospital only two days and brought our lovely girl home on Sunday, June 26. Her brothers were absolutely delighted--even Tommy, who we were sure would be eaten up with jealousy.

Brady, in particular, adores her and even picked out a name for her. It came as a terrible shock for him that were not going to name our baby 'Princess Flower'. He cried and refused to call her anything else. Don't worry. Her name is still Audrey Karren Lyle, but our sons like to tell everyone we meet that her name is Audrey Karren Princess Flower Lyle.

So now Audrey is a week old and we can't imagine that we ever lived without her. What a blessing our baby girl is!

Here's what's up...

Well, we're happily settled in the new house (can we really have been living here six months already?!) and eagerly awaiting the arrival of our little girl (just five weeks away!)

Brock spends every available minute (and he doesn't have many) in the yard and it looks amazing! He trimmed the wild hedges, planted a beautiful garden, dug out almost all the weeds, and his next project is to build the play structure we bought last week. And with all he does, he still finds time to play with and read with our boys. He's a wonder!

I'm doing what I can to keep the house in order, but it's not much at the moment. I'm under orders to keep off my feet as much as I can so this little girl doesn't make too early an appearance. I fill the hours with writing and playing solitaire. Don't worry, Brock and my mom are covering for me. Hmmm. So much for an update on what I'm up to--it's not much.

Brady is done with preschool until the fall, when he begins his pre-K class. He calls it his "four-year-old school" and is very excited to get started. He has a wild imagination and tons of energy (like most 4-yr-olds, I expect). He sings all day (some songs are recognizable, but most are his own creations), plays nicely with Tommy (most of the time), and runs outside until, as he puts it, "my breath is tired out." He is very excited about his little sister and can't wait for her to come out so he can hold her and play with her "cute little toes".

Tommy is not so enthusiastic about the baby, but he is willing to gaze at the belly and say "so cute" when Brady tells him to. He chatters constantly, but is only rarely understood. Still, his vocabulary is large and if he repeats himself often enough, we can figure out what he wants eventually. He trots around after Brady, cheerfully copying everything his brother says and does, and with a little bit of a swagger to his step--you'd think he owned the place! He is our little tease and more than a little bossy--driving Brady crazy every chance he gets.

We love them both so much it hurts!

So that's our family at the moment. We'll let you know when little girl arrives!

New Year and a New Life

Wow. It's amazing how much life can change in only a few months.

We have purchased our first home and are mostly settled in. It's a charming little house--not too old or too new and 'modernish'. The yard is big and secure. It's close to Brock's office and the schools are excellent. The neighbors are nice and the neighborhood is safe. This house isn't huge, but there's room to grow.

Which is good because we're expecting a new little one in July. And this time (just to shake things up) we're having a GIRL! Whoa! I was not expecting that one! Guess we'll be investing in a lot of pink. ;)

Of course, just to complicate things, my younger brother is getting married in St. Louis a few weeks after our daughter is due to arrive. Whew!

Meanwhile, the boys are growing every day and getting more and more fun every minute they live.

Brady, now almost fully potty-trained and enjoying preschool, is a chatterbox and an energizer bunny to boot. He's friendly and sweet without a shy bone in his wiry little body. He's polite and careful not hurt anyone (by word or fist), though he's plenty stubborn and not afraid to defend himself, if necessary. And with Tommy around, believe me, it's necessary.

Some of my favorite Brady-isms:
"Wow, Daddy, this is a spicy road!"
"Hey, I'm not a baby--I'm a big boy. No, I'm not a big boy--I'm a Brady!"
"Oh, Mama. We have to write our letters to Santa before we die...or before Santa dies."
"Daddy, no more games. It's time for me to go to bed."
"I went potty. Are you proud of me, Mama?"
"Don't put my toys away, Mama. I said no! You understand me?" (said in his very best imitation of me)
"Oh no! I can't go to bed. The Ghostes will whine at me!"

Tommy is our comedian and tease. He has a passion for physical comfort, in the form of warm clothes, soft blankets, food, and cuddles, but he also gets a big kick out of taunting his brother, startling people, and chuckling at his own (unintelligible) jokes. He can be shy, but is mostly friendly and gradually being cured of biting, head-butting, and face-grabbing. In spite of this, the nursery workers in our ward have officially voted him the cutest baby in the ward. To my great delight, he is willing to attempt any word and is collecting quite the vocabulary.

Some of his favorite words and/or phrases:
"No, no--not that."
"Yeah, yeah--that."
"I go!"
"Mama, Daddy. Mama, Daddy." (repeated countless times)
"Ah-mennnnnn" (at the end of every prayer)
"Wocky!" (defined as juice)
"Ban-ket" (any crocheted blanket he can get his hands on)
"Weeee" (his word for the slide at the park)
"A-wock" (translation: "I want")
And, my personal favorite, "Noooooooooooooo!" (howled in a dramatic, desperate voice whenever his will is thwarted.)

As for the darling princess in my tummy, the only thing we know about her at this point is that she is an active little thing and seems to have her days and nights straight so far. According to her recent ultrasound, she's healthy and growing well. We can't wait to meet her (Well, Brock, Brady, and I feel that way. Tommy seems to have mixed up the words 'baby' and 'belly'. While he's perfectly willing to mimic Brady and 'give the baby kisses', he obviously has no idea what's coming or how it will affect his charmed little life.)

So, here we are--a new year, a new home, and a whole new life!

Generations

My cousin Elizabeth recently posted a picture of her mother (Mary) as a baby and her own sweet little baby. Here's My Aunt Mary at one year old...

Now, for those of you who don't know, I am said to look a lot like my Aunt Mary. Still, it came a surprise to see how much her picture reminded me of these two darlings when they were a year old...

Cool, huh?

Family update

It's been a while since I gave a general family update, so I thought I'd fill in a few blanks left from the boys' blogs.

Brock is insanely busy at work, but we can't complain--job security. Anyway, he still manages to get home in time to help put the boys to bed (9 pm in the summer months). He loves to plan fun weekend activities for the family (like a day at Happy Hollow or visits to Hidden Villa Farm) and golfs whenever he can squeeze it in. He is also kept busy house-hunting with our new agent. We would love to find a place in the next six months or so.

Brady fills his days with potty training and high-energy playtime. He loves to play outside with the other kids in our complex (there are five or six in his age-range), build long and complex railroad lines, and hold incomprehensible conversations with everyone, including his toys (ALL of his toys). Potty Training is going very well. Brady can keep his "big boy underwares" dry for up to 20 minutes in exchange for junior mints and he gives me fair warning when he needs to use the potty. Just a few more weeks and he'll be in those underwares all day long! He'll start preschool in the fall (and maybe soccer too), so I'm hoping he can manage this before then. His closest friends now-days are Laney Parker, Nylah Agrella, Ryan Kazmucha, and Olivia Zumstein.

Tommy is curious as a squirrel and just as troublesome! This guy has his nose and grubby little fingers in every nook and cranny in the apartment. He's also starting to climb. I'll hear him calling for help and find him in the oddest places (on top of his toy piano, hanging from the safety gate like a monkey, and even perched on the window sill--yikes!) He chatters constantly and loves to mimic. He recently learned to bark like a dog and roar like a monster. Now and then he even utters a few words that make sense (like peek-a-boo, all done, and bottle). Tommy is a terrible lap-hog and even gets jealous if I hug Brock too long. His favorite thing is story time. He will carefully choose a book (usually a touch and feel), hand it to you, and back up into your lap--ready for my story! This is very cute, but we're waiting for his attention-span to last for more than ten seconds at a time.

The boys are best friends and love to play together. They have created a few games that both can take part in (though they usually end with someone in tears). My favorite is the blanket train. Brady drags a long blanket around the house while Tommy stands in the middle of the room, waiting in great anticipation for Brady to run by so he can jump on the blanket. Every time he attempts to grab it, Tommy squeals and Brady shrieks. When he actually gets on the blanket (very rare) both boys scream with laughter and Tommy gets dragged about three feet before he lets go--laughing too hard to hang on.
Other games include: dancing, throwing balls, wrestling, and Tommy knocking down Brady's favorite block or train-track structures (Brady is not a fan of this last one, but they play it four or five times a day anyway).

As for me, I just handed my latest manuscript over to Stan and hopefully we'll hear from a publisher or two by the end of the summer. With all my new free time I intend to make a few blankets for the boys, try to keep this apartment in order, help Brock find us a house, stick to Brady's potty training, and even do a little fun writing on the side (an outline for book 2 and research for my next series). Coming up soon, we have swimming lessons (mid June) and a trip to Utah (late July or early August).

So, that's what we're up to these days. Whew!

Say What?!

Brady talks...a LOT.
So does Tommy, actually, but Brady makes sense. Sometimes.

This morning, on the monitor, Brock and I heard the following:
Tommy: Aaaaaahhhh.
Brady: Shhhh!
Tommy: (giggle) Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
Brady: Shhh! You'll wake up the whale!

huh?

A moment ago, Brady, staring out the front window with a serious expression, told me, "Mama, I don't like lye-jah-ways. I don't like 'em."

Okay then.

Tommy, meanwhile, is throwing a ball for himself to chase in the kitchen--one of the few places Brady will let him play in peace.

When I tell Brady his diaper stinks, he runs away, screaming: "Don't change me, Mama! Don't change me!!!"

Brady can pray by himself too. During his bedtime prayers he often blesses each family member, his juice cup, Ducky, and the fire alarm above his bedroom door "that it be loud and wake me up!"

He has favorite movies: Cars, Alice in Wonderland, Thomas the tank engine, Aristocats, and few we haven't figured out yet: "Jungle" (not Jungle book or Horton hears a Who) and "the naked one" (What???).

Brady's interest in naked (defined as "showing any skin usually covered by a t-shirt and shorts") is on-going. Passing the pool in our apartment courtyard, Brady will point to the group of swimmers and scream "Mama! They're NAKED!!!"

Still, Brady refuses to take part in potty-training. Scolded by a four-year-old girl he plays with for not using the potty, he put his hands on his hips and gave her a look-to-end-all-looks. "I do NOT use the potty!"

Tommy's cute little phrases are a little harder to explain.
Here's what we've deciphered so far:
Daddy--"Dah-tah"
Hi--"aye aye aye"
Yes--"ish"
I'm unhappy!--"Mamamamama!"
All done--"ah-duh"
NO!--"na-na-na-na-na"
Brady--"Buh-Buh"

Easier to understand are: snuggles, hugs, lap-envy (NO ONE ELSE sits in Mama or Daddy's laps!), and waving bye-bye.

Oh my cuties!!!!!
