Halloween Cake

We went to a Halloween party last week and they had a costume contest and a food contest. We didn't win anything for costumes (We were movie titles: Brock was James Bond Goldfinger, Brady was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and I was Devil Wears Prada), but we did pretty well with my Witches Brew Cake.

Check it out. The Brew Cake is Yellow Cake (Dyed green on the inside) and the recipe book is devil's food. The cupcakes are all devils food as well and there's brownie bites here and there as well.

I used blue cotton candy for smoke, but right after I took these pictures they melted and I had blue goo all over the place. Of course, that only added to the general creepiness of the whole thing, so that was okay.

I had a really good time designing and making the cakes, but I'm afraid you can tell just how inexperienced I am with these things. I tried to do a pink brain on one of the cupcakes, but it ended up looking more like a pile of crumpled pink ribbon. Oh well.

Still, it was very yummy and I loved nibbling on it for a few days after the party. It doesn't hurt that we won the third Harry Potter movie with it. Overall, it was a very nice Halloween.

The Great Pumpkins

Brock loves to carve pumpkins and last year he carved a brilliant and complicated jack-o-lantern. I only do faces and not very well. As you can see, this year I won and we all did faces.

If you don't get it yet, they are supposed to look like us. Brady even has his own big-mouthed, dimpled, two-teethed baby pumpkin. It looks alarmingly like him. For ours, we designed each others and then carved our own. You can't see it in these pictures, but I messed mine up so bad! It's covered with pencil lines and the mouth is much bigger than Brock designed. Yeah, I'm not very good with a knife.

They look better all lit up in the dark though, don't they? Awwwww! Like a little pumpkin family. I think, as a whole, they turned out darling.

Carving pumpkins is a great tradition. I'm hoping next year Brady will take more interest in the pumpkins and less in the newspaper.
